Kinetico Signature Series® 935 FAQ
- Is the Signature Series 935 a good choice for very hard water?
Yes. The Kinetico Signature Series® 935 is rated for up to 60 grains per gallon (gpg) of compensated hardness, the highest rating in the Signature Series line, so it's built for very hard water. The Water Quality Association considers water above 10.5 gpg very hard.
Compared with the Signature Series 735, which is rated for up to 40 gpg, the 935 has larger 9" x 35" tanks and 0.75 cubic feet of media per tank, 50% more. Compensated hardness also accounts for iron, so a well with iron may need the 935's extra capacity even when its hardness alone seems moderate. A free water test from your Kinetico dealer is the best way to choose.
- Does the Signature Series 935 add sodium to my water?
Yes, a small amount. When the Kinetico Signature Series® 935 regenerates with sodium chloride, its resin beads exchange the calcium and magnesium in your water for sodium, so softened water contains some added sodium. How much depends on how hard your water is. Kinetico advises that anyone on a sodium-restricted diet count that sodium as part of their overall intake.
If you'd prefer to avoid it, the 935 can use potassium chloride instead of salt. Contact your local Kinetico dealer first, since potassium chloride requires recommended adjustments to your system. Your dealer can also tell you about drinking water options, such as reverse osmosis, that reduce sodium at the tap.
- How do I break up a salt bridge in my Signature Series 935?
To break up a salt bridge in your Kinetico Signature Series® 935, carefully poke the hardened salt in the brine tank with a broom handle or stick until it breaks apart. A salt bridge is a hard crust that forms in the brine tank and stops the softener from making the brine it needs to regenerate.
You may suspect one if the salt level hasn't dropped in a while but your water isn't feeling soft. High humidity, low water and salt use, and potassium chloride can all contribute to bridging. To lower the risk, fill the brine tank only to the halfway point. If the crust won't break up, contact your Kinetico dealer for help.
- Why has my water pressure dropped since I installed my Signature Series 935?
If your water pressure has gradually dropped, the most likely cause is the in-line filter that may have been installed with your Kinetico Signature Series® 935. The filter removes sediment and other solid material from the water before it reaches the softener.
As the cartridge fills up, water pressure throughout your home slowly declines, which means it's time to replace it. Not every 935 includes an in-line filter, so check with your Kinetico dealer if you're not sure. The 935 itself is designed to operate at 15 to 125 psi. A sudden drop in pressure, or one that continues after a filter change, is worth a call to your dealer.
- Can the Signature Series 935 be installed in a garage or unheated space?
Yes, but a Kinetico Signature Series® 935 installed outdoors or in an unheated space, such as a garage, needs protection from freezing. The 935 is designed for water temperatures between 35°F and 120°F, and freezing can damage the unit. Kinetico's warranty doesn't cover damage from freezing, so precautions are important in cold climates.
Talk with your Kinetico dealer about the best location and the right protection for your home before installation, especially if temperatures in that space drop below freezing during the winter. Installation must also comply with state and local plumbing codes, including an air gap at the drain connection. Your authorized dealer handles these requirements as part of a professional installation.
- What should I do with my Signature Series 935 during a boil water alert?
During a boil water alert, put your Kinetico Signature Series® 935 into bypass until your water supply is safe again, then contact your Kinetico dealer to sanitize the system. Signature Series softeners are intended for use on microbiologically safe water.
The same applies if a private well tests positive for bacteria. If your 935 has Kinetico's sliding bypass valve, push the blue side of the handle in until it seats firmly and the red indicator shows. When your water is safe and the system has been sanitized, push the red side in until the blue indicator is fully exposed. Bypass styles vary, so ask your dealer if yours looks different.
With 0.75 cubic feet of softening media in each of its two 9" x 35" tanks, the 935 handles up to 60 gpg of compensated hardness, the highest rating in the Signature Series line. Your Kinetico dealer sets its SmartDisk™ for your specific water conditions, so the softener uses only the salt and water it needs.
The 935 regenerates on demand, based on how much water your household actually uses. When one tank needs to regenerate, service switches automatically to the other, so laundry, showers, and dishes can all happen on the same day without running out of soft water.
The 935 has no electrical components, timers, or computers to set, adjust, repair, or replace. It removes hardness and soluble iron* and regenerates with soft water through countercurrent regeneration, which uses less salt and water than older, multi-cycle regeneration.
